September 8th, 2017~ OSLC Sympathies to the Gullickson Family
Robert Roy (Bobby) Gullickson died on September 1, 2017 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Born in Flandreau on November 6, 1958 to Bob and Faye (Sayles) Gullickson, Bobby joined a family of five brothers and sisters, dozens of aunts and uncles and 65 first cousins—most of whom lived in Moody County. The value of that large and loving family became clear in the summer of 1966 when a farm accident resulted in the devastating brain injury that changed his life. After recovering for several months at Sioux Valley Hospital, he received rehabilitation at Crippled Children’s Hospital and School. Eventually he came home to live with his parents in Egan. After his parents died, he lived with his brother Brad’s family in Brandon until health complications necessitated a move to a group home in Sioux Falls. Though health issues were a constant in his life, Bobby worked as a janitor at Egan School for many years and was proud to be a part of the community. We are enormously grateful for the acceptance and attention he found there. He loved “The Dukes of Hazzard,” Mountain Dew, Harley Davidsons, his nieces and nephews (they adored him back) and driving his four-wheeler around town. (Another testament to small-town living: he was an unlicensed driver in an unlicensed vehicle but nobody EVER stopped him.) Bobby was remarkably undemanding, but he thrived on the attention he received from his extended family and members of the community.
Bobby is survived by his three sisters; JoEllen (Manny) Jason of Marstons Mill, MA, Julie (Bob) Connors of Grand Rapids, MI, and Kristi (Craig) Tamash, of Osterville, MA; two brothers, Marc (Cathy) Gullickson of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Brad (Colleen) Gullickson of Brandon; four aunts, Blanche (Sayles) Kansanback and Beverly (Sayles) Nace of Colman, Doris (Gullickson) Southard of California, Elaine Sayles of Texas and 22 nephews and nieces.
The family will never forget the people who cared for Bobby over the years, beginning with Drs. Otey and Church, who attended him after the accident, and ending with the wonderful staff at Dakotabilities and Dougherty House. We couldn’t begin to thank everyone who helped him during the intervening years—simply because he was helped by everyone who crossed his path.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 8, 2017 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Flandreau, with burial in Midway Cemetery, rural Colman. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau.

Eugenia Ruth Larson, 88, passed away Friday, October 24, 2014 at the Manning Plaza Nursing Home, Manning, IA. Ruth, daughter of Opal G. and Ollie R. (Lackey) Cypert, was born February 12, 1926 in Lockney, TX. She was the second youngest of seven children. She grew up on a farm near Cedar Hill, TX and as a child helped pick cotton on the family farm. She attended Cedar Hill Grade School and Floydada High School. She left high school to go to work in Amarillo, TX. She completed the Western Union Telegraphy course and worked there awhile and also worked at the Panhandle Laundry. While in Amarillo, she enjoyed attending dances where she met her future husband, Laurel Larson, who was stationed at the Amarillo Air Base. On August 4, 1945 they were married in Amarillo. The day after the wedding they left on a train trip to South Dakota for her to meet and visit his family. After a brief return to Texas and after Laurel’s honorable discharge from the Army in October 1945, they moved to South Dakota and in the spring of 1946 moved to a farm southwest of Egan and started farming. They lived on two different farms southwest of Egan until 1968 when they purchased a farm eleven miles south of Brookings. Ruth attended the Church of Christ in Cedar Hill as a child. The Cypert children would often be called upon to sing in church. On April 24, 1953 she was baptized at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and on May 10, 1953 was confirmed into the Lutheran faith and became a member of Clare Lutheran Church. Her daughters remember attending confirmation classes and were there when she was baptized. Ruth was a farm wife typical of that time raising chickens and growing a big garden to can food for the family. She sold eggs every week for spending money. From her egg earnings, she bought a piano, paid for piano lessons for her daughters, bought groceries, and made their Sunday church offering. Ruth loved the piano and although she never took lessons, she could play many songs from ear and enjoyed doing so. Her family remembers her good cooking, especially her Southern fried chicken and milk gravy, baking powder biscuits, and pinto beans. She became a Norwegian cook making lefse for her family. She lived on the farm south of Brookings with her husband for forty years. In 2009, a year after Laurel’s death, she built a duplex on Spafford Square in Flandreau where she lived until May 2012 when due to declining health she moved to Reed House Assisted Living in Denison, IA, to be near Donna. David Leonard Hove, son of Leonard and Bernice (Halvorson) Hove, age 73, died Thursday, June 19, 2014 at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Sioux Falls, SD after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. David was born December 25, 1940, at the Flandreau Hospital. He attended Juve country school and graduated from Flandreau High School in 1959. He received a Business/Economics degree from Augustana College in 1963. David was united in marriage to Connie Bely on June 12, 1966 in Sioux Falls. Their marriage was blessed with two daughters, Danelle and Denita. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Flandreau. Driving a tractor at a very young age on the family farm and accompanying his Uncle Ted to cattle ranches in western South Dakota planted a seed in David that lasted his lifetime. He proudly operated a successful farm and cattle feedlot in Flandreau, raising crops and finishing feeder cattle for market. David had a love for the open road. He enjoyed visiting with fellow farmers and looking at crops and feedlots throughout the countryside. He had a passion for cars. He recently told his teenage grandson, “girlfriends can wait…when I was your age all I was interested in was cars!” His grandchildren enjoyed taking their turn getting a ride in Grandpa’s 1961 Corvette. Of all the hats that David wore, (husband, Dad, grandpa, brother, cousin, friend, farmer, cattle feeder, employer, mentor, sports fan and car enthusiast), he was most proud of the Grandpa hat. He rarely missed an event of his grandchildren’s and proudly told others about them. He enjoyed vacationing with his family in The Black Hills, Disneyworld and Lake Okoboji. He was a fan of Augustana football and basketball games. His family marveled at the fact that wherever they went, David always bumped into someone he knew; he could strike up a conversation with anyone.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Connie, daughters Danelle (Aaron) Schultz and Denita (Leroy) Dinger of Sioux Falls, grandchildren Logan, Brady and Parker Schultz and Landon and Myah Dinger, sister Judy Oslun (Myrtle Beach SC), nieces and nephews, and several cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers-in-law William Oslun and Dennis Bely, nephew David Oslun, and special friend Bill Stahly.

On March 23, 2014 Dort left us to check on Bruce. Dorothea was born on December 29, 1921 in Flandreau, South Dakota. Her parents were Cecil L. and Catherine L. (Taylor) Rahn. Her parents were born and raised in the Flandreau area. Because of economic conditions and employment opportunities of the time Dorothea spent most of her formative years living with her grandparents, Charles and Emma (Morgan) Rahn. Dorothea had no siblings but was raised in a large, active household. Her youth in Flandreau was spent going to school, enjoying friends and swimming or canoeing the Sioux River. She developed and continued through her life a deep fondness for dogs, cats, horses, birds and even had a pet coyote. She graduated High School from Flandreau in 1939. Dorothea met her to be husband when she was in the second grade at Chamberlin grade school and then again at Wiese’s wedding dance. Six weeks later C. Bruce and Dorothea were married, June 4, 1941. They moved to the Chamberlin Family Farm west of Flandreau and had three children, Charles Bruce, Susan Lee and Kay. Dorothea was a stay-at-home wife and mother for the years while on the farm. Dorothea and Bruce were a good ‘team’ as Bruce would think of things to be done or see things he would like to do and Dorothea had the organization skills and temperament to get things done. The Chamberlin household was usually full as Bruce and Dort had many “temporary children”. Many choir members, missionaries, people having difficult times, and a lot of students kept Dort busy. The house was blessed with people from all kinds of backgrounds, Midwestern, African, Mexican, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Australian, European. She was a great cook and played a competitive number of games. Some might call her a ‘cutthroat” opponent. Dort stayed in contact with a number of these people – primarily through letters. Dort had a reputation for writing humorous rhymes, great letters, and for her thoughtful gifts. She continued this even after her stroke leaving her a one handed typist. Dort and Bruce were good friends to many and were blessed with many wonderful neighbors and friends. Dort was not much of an ‘organization’ person but had great organizational skills and was willing to do any task put in front of her. Bruce and Dort left the farm after Bruce had some health issues. They looked for a retirement home in a variety of southern areas but chose to return to and retire in Sioux Falls. Dort did a number of volunteer jobs. The majority of her volunteer hours (in the tens of thousands) were spent at Sioux Valley (Sanford) Hospital. She and Bruce were awarded the Jefferson award in 1991. Those seemed to be the happiest years of her life. After 2003, due to health issues Dort, Bruce and Susan shared a home in Sioux Falls until their move to Riverview in Flandreau at the end of July 2013. Dorothea remained a ‘force to be reckoned with” to the end.
Dort is survived by two daughters, Susan Lee Chamberlin, Sioux Falls, Kay (Jim) Brown, Omaha, 2 grandsons, Charles “Mac” (Jessica) Scofield, Sioux Falls, Thomas (Stephanie) Scofield, Miami, FL and 4 great-grandsons, Sam, Jack, Gabe and Finn. Dort was preceded in death by her husband Bruce, son Charles, parents and many friends.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with burial in Union Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 - 7 pm Monday at Skroch Funeral Chapel with a 7 pm prayer service.
