The Synod Assembly
My experience at the 2023 ELCA Synod Assembly
There were around 400 people in attendance. Our Synod is made up of wonderful administrative staff and we were able to meet them personally and hear them speak. The Synod has a budget comprised of our Medary Conference budgeted donations, along with the other 6 conferences in the Synod. The Synod attains 98% of its money from congregations like ours. Of this 70% goes fund international, national, state and local projects. Another 25% goes to staff wages and benefits and 5% goes to insurance, utilities and supplies.
Programs funded include:
Fund for Leaders- which helps seminary students pay for tuition (this one really stood out to me)
Young Adults in Global Mission- ELCA working with other young adults in mission work
ELCA World Hunger
Lutheran Disaster
Cultivate was this year’s theme for the Conference and we had 2 wonderful speakers.
Rev. Dr Mark Yackel-Juleen from Wartburg Seminary, which we heard a sermon from on Trinity Sunday
Rev. Jon Anderson from Lutheran Seminary also spoke on Friday night.
I took this from his message:
We have city folk and rural folk, but we share more in common than we think. Small congregations are unique and we need to be more curious about it. Cultivating curiosity will go a long way. Stay focused on God and God’s question. Go outside the church and God will guide us. We are to listen, act and share. God works through small things and that’s how God cultivates us.
By God’s Grace together we have EVERYTHING we need.
